Nurses In Council-run Institutions Form Own Trade Union

Nurses in council-run medical facilities have started the process to form a trade union to champion their interests, called the Zimbabwe Urban and Rural Council Nurses Workers Union (ZURCNWU).

The nurses intend to break away from the Zimbabwe Urban Councils Workers Union (ZUCWU) and the Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZINA).

They are arguing that ZUCWU is an umbrella body for all employees in local authorities, and of diverse professions which do not adequately represent nurses.

ZURCNWU president, Simbarashe Tafirenyika told The Sunday Mail that nurses in local authority-run facilities are not adequately represented. He said:

The objective of the union is to represent the nurses who are prejudiced when it comes to labour representation with their employers.
