Newly Developed Ebola Drug Shows A 90% Survival Rate
In a breakthrough trial that has been conducted by an international research group coordinated by the World Health Organization (WHO), since November last year, a drug to manage Ebola might have been found.
The researchers reportedly developed 4 drugs namely
- REGN-EB3
- mAb114
- ZMapp
- Remdesivir
These drugs were administered on 700 Ebola patients and the preliminary results of the drugs on 499 patients are no known. However, when they were testing the drugs, the last two on the list were found to be less effective, unlike REGN EB3 and mAb114 which have a survival rate of 94 % and 89% respectively. The survival rate was among patients with low levels of the virus in their blood.
According to the DRC:
The findings mean health authorities can “stress to people that more than 90% of people survive” if they are treated early, said Sabue Mulangu, an infectious-disease researcher who worked on the trial.

A sense that Ebola is incurable, paired with widespread mistrust of medical workers in the DR Congo, has hampered efforts to stop the spread of the disease.
It is hoped that the effectiveness of the drugs, made by US-based pharmaceutical firms, will make patients feel “more comfortable about seeking care early”, said Dr Fauci.
Ebola ravaged parts of DRC last year and killed 1800 people.
