150MW Power Plant Construction Begins In Hwange
A joint venture between Zimbabwe and China through Zimbabwe Zinghxon Electrical Energy (ZZEE) has seen the commencement of a project that will contribute 150MW to the national grid. The power plant construction has started and is expected to be completed in 3 years time.
The thermal power station will be powered by coal provided by Makomo Hwange Colliery.
According to the Chronicle, the project will be rolled out in 2 phases. The first being a 2 by 25 MW plant then later a 2 by 50 MW plant. Speaking to the same publication, the ZZEE CEO said the project started in February 2019:
We came here to develop Zimbabwe’s electricity economy. Six years ago this company came to Zimbabwe to invest and we have since started operations.
“What we are constructing is a 2x25MW thermal power station. After that, looking at the company’s future, we are planning to build, in the second phase, another 2x50MW unit.

We started constructing the power plant in February this year and according to our plan we will be through0 in three years.
However, we are trying our best to finish it within two years instead. The foundation for the two boilers, which is now in the fourth month, is almost done.
He said once construction of the power station was complete, 300 000 tonnes of coal will be required to run the plant and this will be supplied by Hwange Colliery Company and Makomo Resources.
At 50MW we will require 300 000t per month and will engage Makomo and Hwange Colliery to supply us.
We are already working with the two mining companies who are currently supplying us at our coking plant. Also this project will employ 160 people, most of them being locals.
