BREAKING: Passport Production Increase From 60 To 1 000 Per day - Govt

The government has announced that it has increased the number of passports produced per day from 60 to 1000 following the arrival of passport paper, gold foil, passport covers, glue and security threads as well as a new printing machine for personalisation.

Speaking to reporters after touring the passport production offices at Josiah Magama Tongogara Barracks, Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Ambassador Cain Mathema said new applicants will now collect their passports in a period of a month.

He added that the government intends to introduce day and night shifts so as to increase production to 3000 per day.

The number of passports yet to be produced and printed is not Known but the Herald reports that there is a backlog of about 340 000 that accumulated since last year.

Earlier reports had suggested that passport seekers were now being told to check for their passports sometime in 2022.

This made desperate passport seekers vulnerable in the eyes of some corrupt officers at the Registrar General’s office who started demanding huge bribes.

With the deteriorating state of affairs, scores of Zimbabweans applied for passports with the intention to go into exile and probably come back when the economy would have stabilised.
