Labor Registrar Closes Down Employment Council To Conceal Corruption

Registrar of Labour, Grace Kanyayi, reportedly withdrew the certificate of registration for the National Employment Council (NEC) for Engineering and Iron and Steel Industry, in a bid to cover-up corruption allegations raised against her.

The development reportedly resulted in the collapse of service to members and a number of corruption cases pending in the courts.

Resultantly, NEC though its lawyers made an urgent chamber application on Friday last week in which it wants the High Court to suspend the cancellation of its certificate and ensure that all its operations continue in the interim until a determination on the cancellation is heard and concluded. NEC said:

The drastic purported deregistration and cancellation of the Nec was done by the Registrar of Labour (Kanyayi) in flagrant, wanton, brazen and clear breach of the law and violation of administrative justice guarded in terms of section 68 of the Constitution.

The Employment Council also contends that the unilateral and drastic withdrawal of its certificate had a huge negative bearing on workers as more than 15 000 workers lost their right collective bargaining power and improvement of conditions of employment.
