Zimbabwe Is Committed To Paying Its Debt To ESKOM - Energy Minister
Energy minister, advocate Fortune Chasi has said that Zimbabwe is committed to paying its debt to South Africa power utility, ESKOM.
His remarks come after he has just returned from South Africa where he went to negotiate a power deal with that country.
South Africa has reduced the volumes of electricity it is exporting to Zimbabwe due to the huge debt Zimbabwe owes ESKOM.
The reduction in power imports from South Africa exacerbated an already dire situation as the biggest power generating plant at Kariba is producing less electricity due to low water levels at the Dam.
Chasi told a South African radio station, 702, that efforts are underway to make sure that Zimbabwe has paid its debt to ESKOM. He said:

We have always collaborated with South Africa in the area of power in fact within SADC itself you know that no country is really satisfied with its power availability so we regularly work with other countries.
The first thing that we want to get to the South African authorities is simply to say that we owe significant amounts of money and we are making efforts to pay the debt that we owe to Eskom and we are also grateful for the assistance we have received over time.
He added that Zimbabwe is working towards rectifying its power crisis which has been as a result of a number of issues.
Meanwhile, ZESA acting Chief Executive, Patrick Chivaura, revealed that negotiations for the resumption of power imports from South Africa were now at an advanced stage.
