Police in Bulawayo arrested three men suspected of vandalising Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) power cables in the wee hours on Tuesday.
The three suspects were apprehended with the help of members of the public. Police said in a statement:
Alert members of the public have assisted the police to apprehend 3 suspects for vandalising ZESA overhead cables in Bulawayo.
An informant heard an unusual noise outside his house at around 0200 hours on 23/7/19 and saw some sparks of an electrical fire.
He alerted his neighbour before they went outside to investigate. They discovered that the suspects had cut 2 overhead cables measuring 1 800 metres.
The suspects fled from the scene using an unmarked car and a witness gave chase using his private vehicle and managed to stop the fleeing suspects and retrieved the suspects’ car keys.
The police attended the scene and recovered the cables worth $120 000-00, a bolt cutter and tracked the suspects who had abandoned their car and arrested them.
The suspects will appear in court soon.
