ZANU-PF MP: Govt Should Set Up A Fund To Assist Families Of Deceased MPs

ZANU PF member of parliament for Zaka North Constituency, Robson Mavenyengwa, has said that the government should set up a fund to assist families of deceased MPs.

His remarks come at a time when MPs who recently died including Vimbai Tsvangirai-Java, Sithembile Gumbo, Obedingwa Mguni and Caston Ringisai Gumbwanda had not received their cars and stands at the time of their deaths. Mavenyengwa argued:

After his death (Gumbwanda), we do not know whether the honourable member’s family is going to be given any car by Parliament so that the family has something to remember him with.

I would also like to say since their deaths we have not seen any money going to Gumbwanda, Mguni, and honourable Tsvangirai’s families. Their monies are being eroded by inflation.

The legislator has called upon the Welfare Committee to ensure that the families get what was due to their loved ones.

I remember when I travelled out of the country, a certain MP in South Africa was saying that after serving for a term, you are given R5 million and you can retire with a substantial amount.

This I believe should be done in Zimbabwe also so that Members of Parliament would be cushioned after their tenure.

His remarks resonate with those of Norton legislator, Temba Mliswa who recently called upon the government to review the salaries of MPs in light of the current economic crisis.
