NETBALL WORLD CUP: Sunshine Girls Of Jamaica Too Shiny For Zimbabwe Gems
Zimbabwe national Netball team, the Gems, lost to the Sunshine Girls 77 – 47 at the Vitality Netball World Cup at the M&S Bank Arena.
The Gems came into the game as the underdogs, facing one of the world’s top teams with Jamaica ranked second, in a match to determine the team to progress to play for a fifth and sixth place tomorrow.
The Jamaicans, are missing out on a spot in the semi-finals for the first time since 1995. Their victory slides them to the fifth-place match against Malawi tomorrow.
The Zimbabweans made a few costly passing errors, losing possession of the ball in attack. The errors, coupled by some interceptions by opponents, the first stanza ended 23-15 in favour of Jamaica.
The Gems coach, Lloyd Makunde, made some changes, however, Zimbabwe struggled in the second quarter managing only nine goals and failed to restrict their opponents who scored 24 goals to stretch their lead to 23 goals.

The Gems fought bravely in the third quarter managing 14 goals against Jamaica’s 12. Unfortunately, the damage had already been done and Jamaica held on to the lead to beat Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe player, Sharleen Makusha, described the match as one of the tough games the Gems had ever experienced. She said that the match was, however, a lesson for her and the team since Jamaica is one of the best in the World. She also said the World Cup opportunity might open other doors for the Gems.
Zimbabwe will now take on Uganda in the seventh and eighth position play-off match tomorrow.
