Eight Factors Zimbabwe Needs To Consider To Solve Economic Woes

Management expert, Simon Bere, has said that Zimbabwe needs among other issues to have a long-range economic master plan if real economic transformation is to be realised. He proposes seven other factors which he believes will revive the country’s economy which is currently in a parlous state. We present below all the eight factors.

1.    The Need for a Long-Range Economic Master Plan

Bere observes that short term economic plans which Zimbabwe has been producing over the years were doing the country a disservice. Bere noted that the 5-year economic plans which were now being conceived as part of election manifestos would be dropped after every five years. Resultantly, every election cycle has come up with a completely different economic plan. Therefore there were no follow-ups resulting in major planning challenges. He believes that having a long-range national plan will maintain economic direction.

2.    The Need of a Complete Process from Problem to Solution and from Plan to Desired Results

Bere said that it was common knowledge that Zimbabwe has been failing to implement its nicely drafted economic plans and blueprints. He recommends the adoption of a six-step process-asses situation, think, plan, act, measure results and review and adjust performance and strategy. Another popular and effect process is the vision, image, strategy, performance, alignment, resourcing, action, results measurement and strategy and performance review and adjustment.

3.    The Need for Skills and Capacity

Bere also argues that it was not enough to have clearly designed plans. He notes that it was essential to have the right number and quality of resources required for the implementation of those plans. He identified skilled personnel and financial capacity as some of the most vital resources.

4.    The Government-Private Sector Binary Approach

Mr Bere said in addition to government and the private sector there is need to consider input from two other players namely, the Philosophers, Original Thinkers, Theorists and Strategists (The POTTS), and the technocrats, intellectuals, teachers, academics and specialists (The TITAS). He noted that because of researches they usually conduct, they tend to be informed of the past, present and the future.

5.    The Lack of an Integrated Planning and Execution Approach

He also said that it was important for Zimbabwe to work as one unit. Hw warned that uncoordinated efforts tend to result in duplication of duties and responsibilities and double allocation of resources.

6.    The Need for a  Strategic Approach

Mr Bere noted also that the strategic approach was vital for success. He advises that strategy and leadership should be married as they are one thing. He added that this will remove bottlenecks which are associated with bureaucracies.

7.    Poor Leadership Model

He also suggested that Zimbabwe come up with the desired leadership model as the type of leadership has a huge bearing on efforts to revive the economy. Bere also noted the need for a leadership capacity building program for leaders in all dimensions particularly in the political, economic, business, organisational and technical domains of the economy.

8.    The Need for High Levels of Organisation

Bere noted that the nation was divided. He observed that if individuals would combine forces, they would build a formidable force with the capacity to attain a common economic vision.
