ED Urged To Back His Anti-Corruption Rhetoric With Tangible Action
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been accused of failing to support his anti-corruption rhetoric with real action. The accusations come after the president has, since his ascension to power in 2017, has been preaching about the need to curb corruption which is rampant in the country.
As the News Day notes, the frustration of magistrate Nyasha Vhitorini’s frustration recently over the slow progress of a corruption case speaks volumes about lack of required enthusiasm in fighting corruption. Even some members of the ruling party, ZANU PF, recently confessed that there was only lip service on corruption and that leaders lie about fighting the deeply entrenched issue.
Afrobarometer recently reported that corruption was actually on the rise although there is a slight decrease in corruption in some sectors of the economy.
The News Day attributes the collapse of many parastatals to corruption, yet, no real action was being taken to address the issue. Part of the article reads:

The collapse of such institutions as the National Railway of Zimbabwe, Cold Storage Commission and steel-making giant, Ziscosteel, can all be traced back to massive corruption by State actors.
The publication further argued that there is still a lot to be done for the citizenry to be convinced that really the government was committed to fighting corruption.
