Mliswa Threatens Legal Action Against Govt Over MP's Welfare

Norton legislator, Temba Mliswa, yesterday threatened to take the government to court over the welfare of parliamentarians. Mliswa argues that the government has been neglecting its duty to make sure that parliamentarians are cushioned from the bumps of life.

Mliswa was raising a point of privilege in the National Assembly yesterday. He said:

The welfare of parliamentarians must be taken seriously madam speaker. When the Executive makes an undertaking, they must fulfil it. Madam Speaker, I am going to approach the Constitutional Court to ensure that this matter is dealt with. The salaries of MPs have not changed and the cost of living has gone up.

The SROC (Standing Rules and Orders Committee) makes decisions and they are ignored by the executive. We were given the ZW$50 000 as CDF (Constituency Development Fund), but the money has been eroded. Something has to be done,” Mliswa said.

His remarks come barely a week after Finance Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube las week announced that he would procure the vehicles for the MPs this week.

The MPs are demanding that the government buys them Land Cruisers, which they said are the only cars good enough to assist MPs in executing their duties and responsibilities.
