Ibetshu Likazulu Plans To Erect New Plaques For Gukurahundi Victims

A Bulawayo-based pressure group plans to rebuild memorial plaques fro Gukurahundi victims at Bhalagwe in Maphisa.

Ibetshu Likazulu in February created memorial plaques at Bhalagwe in memory of thousands of victims of the 1980s genocide, but they were vandalised by unknown people.

Ibetshu Likazulu secretary, Mbuso Fuzwayo, told NewZimbabwe.com that the new plaques will be erected on Heroes’ Day in August. He said:

We are intending to erect new plaques on Heroes’ Day, next month. So far, we are currently mobilising resources for the project.

We are also appealing to those who are willing to assist with material like cement, bricks and transport. This is a national cause considering the President (Emmerson Mnangagwa) has openly talked about the atrocities.

Kuzwayo revealed that the organisation will mark this year’s Heroes Day by respecting the people who were massacred during Gukurahundi. He added:

This year we will commemorate our mothers and fathers who died during Gukurahundi. Every year on Heroes’ Day we always remember those people who were killed by the Rhodesian forces in places like Nyadzonya, Chimoio and Zambia yet we cannot remember our own people who were killed by a black government.

Maphisa district in Matabeleland South province reportedly experienced the worst Gukurahundi atrocities when the post-independence government deployed a North Korea-trained army unit to deal with “dissidents’.

However, thousands of civilians were killed and there are mass graves in the district where the victims were buried.
