Zimbabwe Tightens Screws At Beitbridge Border Post

The Department of Immigration Services has revealed that it is putting in place measures to deal with wheeler-dealers, human traffickers and border jumpers at Beitbridge border post.

Speaking during a tour of the border post by the parliamentary portfolio committee on Defence, Security and Home Affairs recently, Assistant Regional Immigration Officer (ARIO) Mrs Memory Mugwagwa said they wanted to enforce compliance with immigration laws.

Mugwagwa also said that the immigration department was working on a number of strategies to address the issues of human smuggling, mainly children, along the border with South Africa.

She added that they had deployed adequately on the ground though they needed more manpower at the country’s and SADC’s busiest port of entry.

  1. Well and good. Meanwhile, they should also ensure that screws are loosened at the issuance of passports to complement these noble efforts. Wheeler dealing, child trafficking and border jumping at Beit Bridge border post is just a manifestation of the problems in Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru, Kadoma, you name them and so many other places in Zimbabwe.

  2. if people were able to get passports in time and the economy was right this scenario would not exist. therefore deal with the problem and not symptoms. be wise.
