Waiting For 2023 Without Electoral Reforms Is Like Lambs Going To The Slaughterhouse - Magaisa

Academic and political commentator Alex Magaisa says the appointment of Utloile Silaigwana to the post of Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) Chief Elections Officer shows that the government is not serious about reforms.

Writing on social media site Twitter, Magaisa opined that waiting for the 2023 elections without demanding reforms is akin to lambs volunteering to the slaughter. He wrote:

We already saw that there is no appetite for change in this regime. But if there was any doubt, the confirmation of Utoile Silaigwana as ZEC Chief Elections Officer seals it.

It’s the proverbial middle finger to political reforms. He’s an inveterate member of the establishment.

Elections are the primary means of selecting political leaders. But they have to be credible. To be credible, the referees must not only be fair; they must be seen to be fair.

In the circumstances, waiting for 2023 without challenging this compromised system is like lambs volunteering to the abattoir.

It will be a pointless exercise; a waste of effort and resources; raising expectations where none exist. Not with the likes of Silaigwana presiding.
