"The President Is Surrounded By Corrupt People," Tendai Biti
The Vice President of the opposition MDC, Tendai Biti has claimed that President Emmerson Mnangagwa is incapable to address corruption in the country since he is surrounded by corrupt people.
He told the Independent that the recently released annual public audit report by Auditor-General Mrs Mildred Chiri presents the president with a perfect opportunity to act decisively on public sector mismanagement and deep-seated corruption. He, however, revealed that he was pessimistic about that happening because of the people around Mnangagwa.
Auditor General’s report revealed profound public finance mismanagement which has the potential to further cripple the economy if left unattended.
Biti who is the Former Finance minister and chairperson of the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee said that he was now pushing for criminalisation for non-compliance with the Auditor-General’s recommendations. He added:
We also proposed regular monitoring, feedback by the minister (Mthuli Ncube).

Biti likened having faith in Mnangagwa on dealing with corruption as believing a mosquito would cure malaria. He said:
President Emmerson Mnangagwa is surrounded by corrupt people and officials. A mosquito can’t cure malaria.
Mnangagwa has been talking about the necessity to deal with corruption since getting into power in 2017. Some individuals including former Finance Minister, Ignatius Chombo have since been arrested over corruption allegations.
Analysts, however, assert that there is a mismatch between talk and action on corruption. Others argue that Mnangagwa is only targeting his political enemies. Recently, he promised to institute a commission of enquiry to investigate corruption allegations against top government officials.
