"I Prefer That The Public Gets Correct Info" Chasi On US$10m Zim Purportedly Paid To ESKOM

Energy Minister, advocate Fortune Chasi has said that the mechanics of payment to ESKOM are with the Ministry of finance and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. This comes after it was recently suggested that ZESA, which the ministry of Energy oversees had paid US$10m to South Africa’s power utility, ESKOM. The SA power utility has however since came out denying receiving anything from Zimbabwe.

Resultantly, members of the public came out accusing the Chasi led sector of lying to the country. Posting on microblogging site, twitter, advocate Chasi said:

I’m sorry I have been unable to respond. I was & under the weather too. I have no reason to tell lies about such an important matter. The mechanics of payment to escom are with min of finance & rbz. I rely on what I get from there.

He added that the energy sector was better off operating on the truth. The minister said:

I prefer that the public gets correct info. We cannot operate the sector on falsehoods for sure. I am really sorry that I am being termed dishonest. It would be the most foolish of lies.

Zimbabwe owes ESKOM and Hydro Cahora Bassa a combined US$68 million, a development that resulted in the two power utilities stopping exportation of electricity to Zimbabwe. ZESA has been negotiating with ESKOM and Cahora Bassa so as to effect a resumption of power supply.

Zimbabwe has a crippling power shortage which resulted in most suburbs going for 17 hours without power every day.
