Harare Flyovers Need Urgent Attention

It’s a chilling fact to note that Harare Flyovers have become hazardous to motorists and pedestrians who pass through these structural faults ridden structures. The Sunday Mail has emphasised the need for urgent remedial recourse because they pose harm to Hararians. This came out in a letter that was written by Zimbabwe’s Institute of Engineers’ President to the president and the parliament.

Mr Musarurwa the ZIE president noted that the structures were inspected over a decade ago and a recommendation was given to the city fathers. However, the council have not been able to fix the problem since then. Said Musarurwa:

This is the case of the flyovers on Simon Mazorodze interchange with Rotten Row, which bridges were inspected in 2006, and serious structural defects were noted and reported upon, yet no action has been taken to date. Unfortunately, this is not the only case needing urgent remedial action. Other bridges on the national highways have also been inspected and reported upon that remedial action was required.

When the city fathers were asked why they haven’t redressed the issue they said the flyovers were a responsibility of the Ministry Of Transport and Infrastructure Development. They have however gone on record saying they are now working together with the ministry to redress the issue.

The flyovers are now ridden with faults due to lack of maintenance The Sunday Mail reported.
