Zimbabwe Gets Poor Ratings In Africa Media Index

Zimbabwe has attained very low marks in five categories of the Africa Media Index. Resultantly, it has been ranked number 12 out of 14 countries.

Africa Media Index studies provide insights on trends and knowledge of the media sector and how it affects investment, governance, local business and economies. The Index identifies trends that are relevant to industry investors looking to increase their footprint and reach multiple audiences in a meaningful way across the continent.

Below are the scores Zimbabwe in every category:

  • Economy and business: 41,63 points, was number 11.
  • Media landscape: 24,71, was number 12.
  • Media consumers: 43,94 points, was number 10.
  • Technology: 33,38 points, was number 9.
  • Governance and legislation: 46,80 points, was number 12.

South Africa is the first in the overall rankings after topping each of the five categories. It is followed by Ghana then Botswana whilst Mozambique is last in the overall rankings.

Various economic and business factors, availability of media and internet penetration; a country’s media consumer population, capacity to provide the necessary infrastructure for media dissemination; governing and legislative framework and its interaction with media consumers, commerce, technology, and the media landscape were essential in coming up with the total score in categories above.

In a statement, GroupM sub-Saharan Africa chief executive officer Federico de Nardis said Africa has a very lethargic economic growth characterised by its gross domestic product which stands at 2% of the world’s total.
