Herald Editor Zindoga Says He's Sworn To Defend The Country From Foreign Forces

The Herald Acting Editor Tichaona Zindoga said that as a journalist he is sworn to defend the country from hostile forces and that he’s not ashamed to do it.

He was speaking during a show hosted by Zimpapers Television Network where the role of journalists in national dialogue was being discussed. Zindoga and the other guests had been asked by the host, Candice Mwakalyelye if the media in Zimbabwe is promoting national healing and cohesion.

Journalists from private owned media responded that this was not the role of journalists in a country and criticised state-owned and state-controlled media for taking on the role of being appendages of political parties.

Zindoga responded that his co-guests were being hypocritical as they are themselves influenced by some foreign forces:

We could talk about certain fundamentals, the ideology of journalism that you have alluded to, but when it comes to real practice, we have had people getting envelopes or control and influence from regime change forces for example from outside.

And they then accuse the people [public media of poor journalism]. For some us, we are sworn to defending obviously the country in our narrative from hostile foreign forces, and we’re not ashamed to do that.

Following his comment, Zimbabwe Independent Editor, Dumisani Muleya commented:

This is shocking. Absolutely shocking. To hear a journalist saying that. I’m shocked by a journalist who says his job is to defend a country. I’m gutted to hear this because I had never understood journalism to be going out there to defend [a country].

Zindoga became The Herald Acting Editor after former editor, Joram Nyathi was fired for not publishing Mnangagwa’s picture on the front page of the paper.
