UPDATE: On Obert Masaraure, ARTUZ President

News Day reports that Obert Masaraure, ARTUZ President, is being moved now from Harare Central Police, Law and Order to Harare Magistrates Court. He will appear in court today. He was arrested yesterday for allegedly not reporting to the police on the 7th and 14th of June, an action the state said constitutes a violation of his bail conditions.

A warrant of arrest was issued after the state represented by Prosecutor Sebastian Mutizirwa told the court that Masaraure, who was on remand violated his bail conditions by not reporting to the police station. The Artuz leader was ordered by the court to report to the police once every week.

Mutizirwa also added that State security agents visited his workplace at Chemhanza High School in Hwedza, but failed to locate him. As proof, the prosecutor presented two letters written by the school headmaster and his deputy confirming Masaraure’s absence from work.

Masaraure is being accused of trying to overthrow a constitutionally elected govenment by urging members of the public to protest during the January fuel demonstrations. News Day reports that before his arrest he had said his life was in danger. It reports:

I have been receiving medical attention since my abduction of 6 June 2019. A medical affidavit is available to that effect.

I have faith that my God will keep me safe during these difficult times. I now walk into Hwedza police station to report as is expected on my bail conditions. If they arrest me this is my story.
