ZANU PF, MDC Alliance To Share ZWL$12 Million

The MDC led by Nelson Chamisa is set to receive $3 596 400 from the government under the Political Parties Finance Act for the votes it garnered in last year’s general election.

The government announced that it has set aside $12 million to be shared by parties that received at least 5% of the votes, in terms of the Act.

The money will be shared on a proportional basis and with ZANU PF getting 70.3 per cent of the popular vote against the MDC Alliance’s 29.9 per cent, it will receive the lion’s share of the booty.

A circular published by Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi reads in part:

It is hereby notified, in terms of section 3(2) of the Political Parties (Finance) Act [Chapter 2:04], that the total amount of money payable to political parties in respect of the year beginning 1st January 2019 and ending on the 31st December 2019, is $12 million dollars.

However, the MDC has a pending Supreme Court case after it appealed against a ruling by the High Court that Chamisa’s leadership is illegitimate.

It remains to be seen if Chamisa will be denied the money since he participated in the election not as MDC-T or MDC, but as MDC Alliance.
