"We Build This Country Together,” Chamisa Reaches Out To Khuphe

MDC president Nelson Chamisa yesterday reached out to his former boss Thokozani Khupe at the funeral wake of Vimbai Tsvangirai-Java. Chamisa was speaking after scores of mourners jeered the leader of a splinter MDC group.

The youthful leader said that Tsvangirai-Java’s funeral had helped bring them together in mourning their former leader’s daughter, who died from injuries sustained in an accident that occurred near Kwekwe last month. The accident claimed the lives of Paul Rukanda, who was her campaign manager and Tafadzwa Mhundwa, a relative who was also an active MDC member. Chamisa said:

I am not happy with what you have done to (Dr) Thokozani Khupe. … Khupe must be respected as a person who served the country. … Khupe worked with Vimbai.

I honour you … Khupe. We must learn from the parable of the fig tree. … Khupe once more I salute you, you were my deputy prime minister when I was a minister, you were my deputy president in the party and I was the spokesperson. We build this country together.

He also took the opportunity to emphasise the need to have “a negotiated dialogue” which he said is the only way to pull Zimbabwe out of both political and economic crises. Chamisa also said that a mediator will not be necessary if people are united. He added:
