Govt Sets Aside $70 Million For People's Shops - Mutsvangwa

The government is set to introduce people’s shops in every corner of Zimbabwe, a cabinet minister has claimed.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said that the shops will be selling basic goods at affordable prices.

Mutsvangwa was addressing a Zanu-PF Manicaland’s Provincial Coordinating Committee meeting held in Mutare on Monday. She said:

We will soon see the introduction of people’s shops in all corners of the countries from cities, towns to villages. Silo products will be sold at affordable prices in these shops.

As Government, we have already set aside $70 million to fund the provision of people’s shops and more funds are already being sourced to ensure that we compete at the same level with these unscrupulous elements in business.

… Rice, mealie-meal, sugar, stock feeds, school uniforms, detergents and other basics will be sold in these shops. Government will soon find partners to see to it that this idea comes to fruition.

Zanu-PF Manicaland chairman Mike Madiro, who is also the Deputy Minister for Home Affairs, said that the idea of peoples’ shops is a move away from price controls which do not work.

He added that the shops will provide stiff competition for businesses in the private sector who have been at the forefront in price hikes.
