MPs Could Be Forced To Leave Cellphones Outside Parliament

Speaker of the National Assembly, Jacob Mudenda said that he will persuade the Committee on Standing rules to ban cellphones in the House.

He said parliamentarians need to be focused on issues in the House rather than tweeting as this will make a mockery of the August House. He said:

I shall persuade the Committee on Standing Rules to ban cellphones in the House.

There are no cellphones during Cabinet. There are no cellphones in the judiciary services. Why should we see them in Parliament?

You underestimate your importance, you should be attentive 120 per cent whether I am there or not.

Wherever you go, whether you are meeting the public or not your attention should be 120 per cent. That’s the new mathematical coding I am giving you.

Mudenda was addressing the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs and civil society during a workshop held in Kariba recently.

He added that cellphones were not allowed in Parliament in countries such as Britain, South Africa and the United States of America.
