Energy Minister Fortune Chasi disputed claims made by his predecessor, Joram Gumbo that the country has enough fuel to for the next two years.
Earlier this year, Gumbo said that the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe had paid for enough fuel to meet national demand for 24 months. Gumbo said then:
I was invited by the President today (back then) to a meeting where there was the RBZ Governor John Mangudya.
I was shown several payments made by the central bank to procure fuel.
I was shown payments that would cover the next 24 months.
However, Chasi denied Gumbo’s utterances outrightly. While responding to a question over the issue during a post-cabinet briefing on Tuesday, he said:
The situation that I face currently as Minister of Energy is that I do not have supplies for service stations to disperse to the public.
I want to believe that the reference and I stand to be corrected, may have been to fuel that has been pumped up but that has not been paid for.
If I had fuel that would last two years, I would be the happiest person on the planet.
Gumbo, who now works in President Mnangagwa’s office after his demotion, did not respond to Chasi’s remarks as he sat a short distance away.
The post-cabinet briefing was attended by several cabinet ministers, namely Mangaliso Ndlovu, Mthuli Ncube, Fortune Chasi, Joram Gumbo and Monica Mutsvangwa.
