A political analyst, Maxwell Saungweme has decried the number of lawyers in the MDC top seven. This follows the election of the new MDC leadership at the party’s just ended 5th elective congress held in Gweru.
In the presidium, there are three lawyers namely, advocate Nelson Chamisa, advocate Tendai Biti and Professor Welshman Ncube. Deputy party Chairperson, Job Sikhala and Treasurer-General David Coltart are also lawyers.
Saungweme, however, believes that the Congress has some credibility. He also said that it was an eye-opener that no one was bigger than the party. Saungweme said:
I think the congress was well handled and the election has some credibility. This is how democracy works, no one is too big to fall, or too small not to rise in democracy.
The party must be bigger than individuals. I like the composition of the leadership especially the youth wing that attained a 50:50 gender parity and is an all young people wing that fit the youth bracket. I also like the women’s wing that has labour and a mix of erudite, talent and grassroots.
The main executive is a bit worrying, with too many lawyers, but that is democracy.

There is law and there is attitude to the law, these are separate thematic areas. The question is when there are faced with nepotism as is the norm here in Zimbabwe, will they uphold to the rule of law. Another question is, if being a lawyer was that important in the upholding of the law, with all these lawyers in the MDC was there no better way they could have handled the Tsvangirai succession issue without splitting the party? Now you see that its too early to accredit full throttle of democracy to the MDC, lets use a wait and see policy. Lip service is what Zimbabweans know better.
