Olonga is known for a protest he did alongside his captain Andy Flower when the duo wore black armbands in their opening match of the 2003 World Cup against Namibia to protest against the then President Robert Mugabe and “mourn the death of democracy in Zimbabwe”.

Olonga retired from international cricket soon after the protest and fled the country after receiving death threats.

He emigrated to Britain where he lived for 12 years before moving to Adelaide, Australia where he is living with his wife Tara and two daughters.
