The recently held MDC Congress has reduced Douglas Mwonzora (former party Secretary General) to a mere party card carrying member. Although Mwonzora was ahead of Molekele, he was pipped to the post by Chaltonn Hwende. Below are the results from the Congress for the Secretary-General post:
- Hwende – 2099
- Mwonzora – 721
- Molokele – 577
- Spoilt – 13
Mwonzora’s last hope now becomes party president Nelson Chamisa who was granted powers by the National Council to appoint some top party officials.
In the meantime, Mwonzora’s political career remains in limbo. There were some party members who were demanding Mwonzora’s departure from the party arguing that he was a ZANU PF agent hired to destabilise the party. Others, however, argued that Mwonzora is one of a few voices of reason remaining and losing him would be to the detriment of the party.
Before the Congress was held, Chamisa promised sweeping reforms that would see those accused of being members of the ruling ZANU PF sent packing.
