Chombo's Passport Law Suit Takes New Twist
Ignatius Chombo, Former Home Affairs minister has approached the High Court seeking a court order that compels the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) together with three other defendants to release his passport. This comes after Magistrate Lazini Ncube trashed his application on the basis that the magistrates’ court had no jurisdiction to do so.
Lovemore Madhuku, his lawyer filed an agent chamber application citing the NPA, two Harare magistrates, Barbra Mateko and Lazini Ncube and the clerk at Harare magistrates court as respondents.
The application follows the seizing of Chombo’s passport at Robert Mugabe International Airport by secret services agents. Magistrate Barbra Mateko had issued an order that allowed Chombo to have temporary possession of his passport up to 21 June 2019 to enable him to travel to South Africa for medical purposes. Chombo was therefore forced to abandon his trip to South Africa after his passport was seized.
In his application, Chombo argued that the seizure of his passport caused serious inconveniences to the airline, other passengers, his doctors in South Africa as well as his family. He also argues that the passport was unlawfully taken from him.
