MPs Demand That Vice Presidents Appear For Grilling

Opposition MDC MPs on Wednesday asked the Speaker of Parliament why the two vice presidents, Constantino Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi rarely attend Parliament to answer questions on government policy.

Mutare Central MP, Innocent Gonese reminded the speaker that the two vice presidents are obliged by the law to appear before MPs during Wednesday’s question time. Said Gonese:

Honourable Speaker, there is also the issue of Vice Presidents. I think you have noted that ever since we have started, I don’t actually recall a day where the two honourable vice presidents were in attendance for the question time.

I am not sure whether they understand Section 107 of our constitution and our standing orders.

I am not sure whether they are aware that they are obliged to be present in Parliament in order for them to answer all questions.

In his response, House Speaker Jacob Mudenda said that he was concerned over the absence of Cabinet Ministers especially during Wednesday’s question and answer sessions.

He also bemoaned parliamentarians’ tendency of absconding Parliament.

Mudenda promised to relay the MP’s concerns over the unavailability of the Vice Presidents to President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
