Malawi Rejects Claims Zim Police Officers Were Brought To Rig Elections

Malawi Electoral Commission chair, Jane Ansah, on Monday dismissed claims the former Zimbabwe Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri was in the country on a rigging mission.

Speaking at a press conference, she said the claims are baseless and are meant to divert voters from voting. Ansah is quoted as saying:

We have received one report of an allegation that there’re plans of rigging. That there are people wearing police uniforms and that there’s one man from Zimbabwe who trained and deployed these people. Police response is that these claims are baseless.

Our system has been tested and is fool-proof. No one has tried to hack into the system.

… There will be no internet shut down. Should there be any problem it will be network congestion.

There were reports over the weekend that Chihuri who is thought have been living in Malawi since the November 2017 military coup, has been roped in to influence the outcome of the country’s election.

Malawians will head to the polls on Tuesday 21 May 2019, casting their votes to elect a president, members of parliament and local government councillors.
