Water Leaks Causing Intermittent Water Supply In Bulawayo

Bulawayo City Council has lamented the ageing of water pipes which are crippling the city’s efforts to provide adequate water.

Council minutes reveal that in March alone, about 565 reports were made on water-related leaks. The leaks have been attributed to ageing pipelines. The city is also failing to attend to all leaks reported. In part, the minutes read:

The workshops received a total of 565 reports on water-related jobs and had attended to 366 reports in the month of March 2019. Leaks repaired on service lines totalled 471.

The leaks were due to the continued ageing of the City’s water reticulation pipes. Most of these leaks were on the service connections, which are just before the meter. Most of these service connections were galvanised pipes, which corrode quite easily.

A total of five leaks were done on valves whereas 12 leaks were done on hydrants. There was a backlog of 488 water leaks and 86 backfilling jobs to date.
