'Fortune Chasi Has Been Handed A Live Snake'

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Tuesday announced that the Minister of Energy and Power Development, Joram Gumbo, has been reassigned and replaced by deputy Transport Minister Fortune Chasi.

Meanwhile, Daniel Mackenzie Ncube, a political heavyweight from the Midlands province has been appointed the chairman of the National Oil Infrastructure Company (NOIC) Board.

Here is how Zimbabweans reacted on Twitter:

FORTUNE CHASI REPLACES GUMBO AS ENERGY MINISTER, SIGNIFICANCE: 1. Cabinet has grown, Gumbo remains minister. 2. Fuel situation won’t improve. It’s a currency issue. 3. Appointing Ncube at NOIC in advance meant to control (Fortune) Chasi on fuel! Jonathan Moyo.

You know it Musaigwa that in ED’s Government there must be a gatekeeper from the Republic of Midlands, and they most likely come from the Capital city of Mberengwa. So it is natural that Mackenzie Ncube was appointed to keep an eye on @fortunechasi. Chine Vene Vacho Chinhu Ichi.

Ndovaitaurwa ava paidaidzirwa Jobs Jobs Jobs! Then you hear someone saying the President is fighting corruption when he has reappointed one of the most corrupt political elites to work from his office! These folks think that we have no brains.  Hopewell Chin’ono.

Mukanya @fortunechasi has shown himself to be a level-headed and engaging performer. But by all accounts, he has been handed a live snake. If he can tame it, his stock will surely rise. Best wishes, counsel.

As for Joram Gumbo, unfortunately, old habits die hard. Just as it was before, old comrades accommodate each other. Twice now he’s been moved. The gentleman could have been retired but he’s handed a department packaged as a ministry, just to keep him on the gravy train.

I have a sneaking suspicion that ZESA was about to or is itching to raise tariffs. Zvino vobva vati Mukanya ndivo vakwidza magetsi! But I’m sure he will do his best to steer that ship because right now yanga yarasa direction. That Dema Diesel Power plant pane nyaya.

I think it’s important to specify the Energy in question apa because for a moment there I feared for Mukanya’s hands – handling Energy [Mutodi]? Alex Magaisa

Thank you Musaigwa. It’s certainly not a walk in the park. But if we put our minds together & put the national interest at the forefront we will succeed. Fortune Chasi

Mukwasha @fortunechasi. Worked with you in Parliament and no doubt a refined individual. You have my regards and prayers. May God grant you wisdom and courage. Daniel Shumba

Congratulations @fortunechasi you have my full support ready to help you. Glen Sungano Mpani.

A few days ago Chibabest was asked a question related to the Energy Ministry, someone had assumed that particular matter was the responsibility of his ministry, he politely responded and said it was a Ministry of Energy matter. Today @fortunechasi has to answer that now.

@fortunechasi is now Minister of Energy I am happy for him, I have engaged him online for years now and I have always appreciated his willingness to listen and his ability to engage even those way below his level. Makorokoto Soko Mukanya.  Cde Setfree Mafukudze

One way of destroying a man’s promising career is setting them up to fail. The problem is not who’s a minister of what, the entire system is incapable of rescuing this situation… They sat with Gumbo every Tuesday around a table. His actions were their plan. Mduduzi Mathuthu

Joram Gumbo, who has had a torrid time as Energy minister, has been moved to some pointless ministry and he is now replaced by Fortune Chasi. Quite the challenge for Chasi who is quite popular on Twitter. Nqaba Matshazi

God bless you Hon @fortunechasi! Few good men can make big differences. I for one would love to discuss how Tech can solve fuel queues. SMS, fuel allocation, Geolocation, number plates, local garages and using computers (which can’t be corrupt) to get everyone moving fairly. Kuda Musasiwa
