SA ELECTION UPDATE: Counted Votes Point Towards ANC Landslide Victory
Votes counted so far point towards a landslide victory for President Cyril Ramaphosa’s African National Congress (ANC).
With results declared in some 70.7% of districts, it has won about 57% of the ballot, well ahead of the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) on 23%. The Economic Freedom Fighters is trailing way far behind with 10%.
There were fears that the ANC which won by 62% at the 2014 general election would lose some of the support. Voter uncertainty has been rising even some days before the election. Some analysts attributed the uncertainty to the ailing economy and corruption as well as divisions within the ruling party.
Full results are due on Saturday (today).
