Chiredzi Chief Dismayed Over Extinction Of Mopane Worms

Chiefs in the southeast Lowveld are dispirited over the depletion of mopane worms (madora) due to massive deforestation.

Areas that have been greatly impacted include Chiredzi, Zaka and Bikita, which are gradually undergoing desertification.

A local traditional leader, Chief Romwe, expressed horror at the rate of deforestation in his locality. Speaking during an all stakeholders meeting in Chiredzi recently, Chief Romwe said:

We used to harvest tonnes of Mopane worms every year here (Chiredzi), but all this is now history.

The rate at which trees are being converted into charcoal and the actual logging of trees for firewood is slowly turning this district into a desert.
