Forex Shortage Affecting Water Supply - Harare City Council

The Harare City Council has said that the forex shortage in the country has negatively impacted the supply of water. The council has said it has been having challenges buying water treatment chemicals.

The council was responding to reports that there will be no water in the city. Said Harare City Council on Facebook:

Harare City Council has noted with concern reports that there will be no water in the city. Admittedly we having been having challenges in stocking water treatment chemical due to the unavailability of foreign currency. We would like to assure residents that we have enough chemicals to last us until we receive bulk consignments procured in South Africa. Council will continue to treat and supplies albeit in reduced quantities so as to stretch the available resources. We are working with our suppliers to stabilize the situation.

Our chemicals supplies come through Mozambique and South Africa. A disturbance on any of the routes affects supplies. Presently our challenge is on forex to procure. We are waiting for bulk supplies from South Africa which include liquid alum and chlorine gas.

A number of suburbs in Harare have gone without water for several days, some for more than a week.
