MDC Spokesperson Blames Weather Reports On Congress Venue Changes

MDC spokesperson Jacob Mafume has rubbished rigging claims over the conduct of nominations as the party gears towards the elective Congress set fro 24-26 May this year.

Some delegates to provincial congress have expressed dismay with sudden changes to nomination venues. Mafume has, however, explained the reason behind the changes to some venues. He said:

There is nothing called a change of venue and transport challenges at a congress. We are all aware of the fuel situation in the country.

We are all aware that it had begun raining therefore, people can choose to go to a sheltered place.

You cannot continue having a congress at an open space when the weather report tells you it will rain. We have also made sure that a quorum is met. Once it was met, Congress proceeded.

This comes as party secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora threw in the towel saying that he will not challenge party president Nelson Chamisa because goal posts are constantly being changed and the electoral field is tilted in the latter’s favour.

Mwonzora is quoted as saying:

I am no longer able to continue participating in the current Congress.

I have raised my concerns to the chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission, ZCTU led by Mr Japhet Moyo but nothing was done.

I, therefore, had to withdraw because I do not wish to see the party divided.
