Freak Accident Claims 13 Lives At Church Shrine In Hwedza

A freak accident involving a truck carrying maize on Monday morning claimed the lives of 13 people while seven more were injured in Hwedza.

Reports indicate that a group of church members from the Mugodhi Apostolic church were waiting for transport on the roadside along the Hwedza-Mutiweshiri Road.

The truck veered off the road and struck them, killing six people instantly while seven were pronounced dead on arrival at Mount St Mary’s Mission Hospital.

Most of the victims of the disaster are members of the Mugodhi church who may have been from Chitope area where the church is holding its Passover.

The accident was confirmed by the National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi who said that investigations are underway. He said:

The accident occurred around 11 am along Hwedza-Mutiweshiri Road when a truck carrying maize side-swiped a bus which had encroached into its lane.

The lorry hit a Toyota Hilux and ran over church members who were standing by the roadside, waiting for transport.

A government official who attended the scene of the accident said that churches should be moved to a place where there is enough space.

Muchemwa Mugwisi, the director in the office of the Minister of State for Mashonaland East Provincial Affairs had this to say:

We need a long-term solution to this. We need to find space for these churches in an area that is not a threat to human life.
