Fuel Crisis Worsens In Bulawayo And Rest Of Matebeleland

Bulawayo and the entire Matebeleland region are currently experiencing serious fuel shortages, a Daily News article has reported. It is believed that Bulawayo last received petrol and diesel on Friday but, stocks are already running out due to high demand.

This can have an adverse impact on the Independence, Easter holidays, and the annual Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF).

Other regions across the country however still have some stocks of both petrol and diesel.

Ironically, Transport minister Joram Gumbo told the Daily News yesterday that he was not sure why there were erratic fuel supplies in Bulawayo and surrounding areas. Gumbo said:

I have always said there is enough fuel in the country. What is not there is money … the foreign currency to acquire that fuel.

The scarcity of foreign currency has constrained the country’s capacity to import fuel and other essential commodities such as medicines.
