Some MDC councillors in Chitungwiza pulled a surprised after they voted for a Zanu-PF mayoral candidate. In an election to replace a former MDC mayor who resigned in February, a Zanu-PF candidate garnered more votes (7) than the number of Zanu-PF councillors in Chitungwiza (4) revealing that some MDC councillors had voted for him.
MDC vice president Morgen Komichi told the Daily News on Sunday:
We would ordinarily expect that Zanu PF gets what it has so it is worrisome that it got more than it actually has, meaning that there are some of our councillors who voted them, hence an investigation into what transpired will be instituted to weed out the culprits who sold out. It is a sad development really,
MDC councillor Lovemore Maiko, however, won the election, effectively becoming the next mayor of the town. MDC has been battling divisions within the party as it faces it’s National Congress set for May 2019.
The former mayor Gift Tsverere and his deputy Jabulani Mtunzi resigned in February after their election to those positions was challenged at the High Court.
