Mwonzora & Mudzuri Risk Falling By the Wayside
As 6 out 13 MDC provinces have already done their 5th Congresses, party bigwigs Douglas Mwonzora and Elias Mudzuri risk falling by the wayside.
This comes as party president Nelson Chamisa has been nominated by all the 6 provinces unchallenged while Mwozora’s only nomination has been for the post of secretary-general.
Mwonzora’s solitary ‘victory’ came from Matabeleland South province. The other provinces have nominated close Chamisa ally, Chalton Hwende for the post of secretary general.
Mwonzora is the current MDC secretary-general. He won the post in 2014 after beating his then-rival Chamisa.
It was reported at the time that the late party founding president Morgan Tsvangirai had hijacked Chamisa’s ambitions fearing the youthful politician’s rising popularity.

Meanwhile, co-vice president and former Harare mayor, senator Elias Mudzuri has no single nomination so far. He has been touted as one of the contenders for the presidency.
With six provinces concluding their congresses, Chamisa, organising secretary Amos Chibaya and spokesperson Jacob Mafume have been nominated for their current posts unchallenged.
