Edward Nyoni, Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission Distribution Company’s Southern region marketing officer revealed that suspected thieves vandalised Zesa Holdings’ main line to a range booster in Gweru.
It is reported that the damage affected normal power supplies to Gweru’s major water reservoir.
The interruption of electricity supplies to the city’s waterworks is likely to prolong Gweru’s water crisis. Gweru city council announced a dry Friday last week as it embarked on maintenance of water works at Gwenhoro Dam.
Speaking to journalists, Nyoni said:
As highlighted earlier on, our main line to the range booster was vandalised during the night (Monday) by copper thieves.
With regard to this, our dedicated team is already on the ground fixing the vandalised line, but unfortunately, this work will take some hours, though we are certain that you will have your power today (Tuesday).
