Chamisa Yet To Be Challenged As He Takes An Early Lead

MDC president Nelson Chamisa has taken an early lead in the race to be elected MDC president for the next five years at the May 24-26 Congress.

With only two weeks left before nomination closes, Chamisa is without a challenger for the presidency after being nominated by North America and Matabeleland North.

MDC secretary general, Douglas Mwonzora, who was expected to give Chamisa a litmus test, has received one nomination to retain his current position from Matabeleland South province.

However, 10 more provinces, 8 local and 2 foreign, are yet to present their nominations as violence and allegations of manipulation continue to rock the opposition party’s nomination processes.

Jacob Mafume, the party national spokesperson admitted that Chamisa has no challenger for now. Said Mafume:

Yes, it is true, that is the Matabeleland South list. What that means is that a single nomination means one is now on the voters’ roll at Congress. If someone is nominated for two positions, they have to accept only one. We are now in Matabeleland North and all is moving on well.

We are happy with the Congress so far, we are now at the stage of provincial congresses and we have done the USA and Matabeleland South.

Midlands province is set to have its Congress this week, Mafume revealed:

We are going to throw the gauntlet to Zanu PF and we will complete the process of change. We are the largest civilian party. We are the largest party with no military impact and ours is done comradely. It is the sharpening of ideas among Democrats.
