Police Trash Anti-harassment Petition, Detain Journalists

Journalists from the country’s private media marched to the Harare Central Police Station on Monday to hand over a petition against their harassment following the attack on 263Chat journalists last week in Harare CBD.

However, when the scribes arrived at the police station, their petition was reportedly torn in front of them while they were detained by police officers. Writing on Twitter, human rights lawyer Doug Coltart said:

Today Zimbabwean journalists marched to Harare Central Police station to hand over a petition against police harrassment of journalists following an attack on @263Chat’s offices last week. Their petition was torn up in front of them & now they’re detained!

263Chat journalist, Lovejoy Mtongwiza, who is a victim of police brutality wrote:

So when we took our petition to @PoliceZimbabwe Harare Central Police Station, one of the police officers tore our petitions and threw them in the bin. We are simply trying to reason with the police but they are being hostile.
