How They Evaded Cyclone Idai In Malawi

Edward Biasi, the Thaundi, village Headman, (in Malawi), helped people evade Cyclone Idai. He and five other chiefs evacuated the people when Meteorologists predicted more rain and floods. Although their homes and crops were destroyed, there was no loss of life due to floods.

Thaundi has fertile soils although it is prone to floods. Therefore, residents continually feel attracted to it. Biasi said:

We keep going back because we can’t have land anywhere else.

Nessie, her husband and two children remained in Thaundi when others evacuated. They did not want to leave their belongings. Unfortunately, the waters rose to submerge their home. Resultantly, they spent two days in a mango tree waiting for waters to lower down.

Another survivor, Joel Kadalinga (47), departed Thaundi long before the Cyclone. He built a house in Ndamera following the 2015 floods. His house is only a place of refuge, they still reside and farm in  Thaundi. Others who remained met an unfortunate encounter. Kadalinga said:

It was hard for the village to sense that this was a dangerous situation. The weather these days is unpredictable. It was only when the water was up to their necks that they moved.

Kadalinga is helping displaced families and aid organisations. He performs clerical duties, distributes resources and manage water and sanitation projects implemented by aid organisations.

Those who survived however still need food and shelter. Sponsors are likely to vanish, particularly  when rivers  start normalising.
