Govt Set To Build 500 000 Houses In The Next 10 Years Under Command Housing Programme

The government has set in motion a plan to build over 500 000 housing units in 10 years. The plan will also involve the destruction of dilapidated flats in Mbare (Harare) and Makokoba (Bulawayo) which were constructed during the colonial era.

The housing units will be built under the National Command Housing Delivery Programme. This was revealed by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and Nationa George Magosvongwe last week. He said:

The ministry has thus partnered with local authorities in regenerating old and/ or dilapidated houses or flats.

I implore the sector to come up with innovative urban renewal strategies that most importantly leave sitting tenants of these settlements better off.

This will, in turn, create construction opportunities and me, therefore, urge the construction industries to be geared for this.
