Andrew Wutaunashe Castigates ZCTU, Civic Groups For Calling For January Stay Away

A local clergyman, Andrew Wutaunashe on Thursday condemned the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) and other civil society organisations for organising demonstrations that resulted in deaths and injury to people.

Wutaunashe, who is the national chairperson of Faith for the Nation Campaign held civic organisations responsible for the mayhem that occurred in January. While speaking at the launch of the Zimbabwe Unity and Sanctions Relief Initiative (ZUSRI), Wutaunashe said:

What ZCTU did by calling for a shutdown which turned into violence was bad as we saw the destruction of property and killing of a policeman.

Politicians are not supposed to use people as tools for their political ends. As the church, we will speak to such politicians that we want peace and unity among our people.

More than 12 people were killed when a fuel price hike ignited nationwide protests in January. The government has blamed the opposition MDC for the violence even though footage of soldiers and police officers savaging civilians has surfaced.
