Commuter Omnibuses Forced To Slash Transport Fares After Govt Introduce ZUPCO Buses In Bulawayo
Bulawayo commuter omnibuses were forced to slash transport fees from $1.50 t0 $1.00 after the government introduced 77 ZUPCO buses in the City.
The buses were introduced on Wednesday in a move aimed at easing transport problems which were worsened by a massive increase in the price of fuel.
Bulawayo Public transport association Director of Administration, Keeper Ndlovu said that his association was adhering to the gazetted fares. He said:
We are working on the stipulations of charging $1 for our zero to 10-kilometre routes and most of our routes are less than 10 kilometres. If one charge above that then they are overzealous.
… We welcome ZUPCO back, we have worked together well in the past and we are ready to work again. This means more transport for the public and good and healthy competition, for us BUPTA we will give our best for our customers- so the public is the biggest winner at the end of the day.

ZUPCO, however, has very few buses on the road. As a result, the parastatal has partnered with private operators to make the mass urban transport system operational. ZUPCO Acting Chief executive officer Evaristo Madangwa said:
We have partnered private operators to help solve the transport problem that we have now, we want the public to be transported to and from work every day with no hassles. The buses will be operating in the every city routes charging $1 per trip for areas below 20 kilometres and I don’t think we have routes that are above 20 kilometres.
