We Are Just Acting On A Govt Directive: Councils Speak On Demolition Of Illegal Tuckshops

Chitungwiza and Harare councils said they are demolishing illegal structures and tuckshops as directed by Government.

Harare City Council began its citywide exercise in Mbare over the weekend demolishing illegal tuckshops. Harare City Council chief town planner Samuel Nyabeze said the urban regeneration project is being spearheaded by Government. Chitungwiza Acting Town Clerk Dr Tonderai Kasu said council was acting on a pre-existing circular from Government sent to all local authorities last year. Said Kasu:

There is a pre-existing circular from Central Government that was sent to all local authorities last year which was directing all local authorities to conduct clean-up operations and clean-up campaigns. What is happening now is just intensification of work that council had previously been directed to do. As part of the planning process for the current operation, there was an exercise done to identify the sites that vendors are going to be relocated, and this exercise was done before the start of the current operation. The operation is not about how much vendors were or were not remitting to council, it is about bringing sanity to public and open spaces in Chitungwiza.

  1. What a spiteful and horrid Government, people are in such hardships due to Zanu government. Yes the tuckshops are a mess but offer an alternative.

  2. i think our Government is Right in ordering such a directive ! however its these Councils that are to blame in the first place. why leave people building in the wrong places to start with . well im one of those persons who has formally sought assistance from the City of Harare in the past , looking for a place to formally build something for small scale business use. Town Planing officials at Cleveland House are so corrupt , the areas that i had identified for development were instead taken by their connections. my application was delayed for 3 yrs whilst new papers were being manufactured to counter my application.
i can even stand in court to confirm these allegations and can name the officers involved. only if the Government can create a platform to handle this.
